There’s no denying there’s a separation between the middle-tier schools in the B1G and the top dogs. And while most would have Ohio State and Michigan somewhere in their top 5, the No. 3 team is based on personal preference.

For Fox Sports’ Joel Klatt, his No. 3 team in the conference is Penn State. Perhaps it could make the jump to No. 2 after Week 5?

Klatt listed his top 10 teams entering Week 5. Ohio State made the jump over Alabama at No. 2 while Michigan remains in the College Football Playoff conversation at No. 4. Penn State, which could be 5-0 for the first time since 2019, filled out the pack at No. 9.

The Buckeyes handled business against Wisconsin last week on their way to a 52-21 win. Quarterback C.J. Stroud continued his Heisman-caliber campaign with 281 yards and 5 touchdowns. As for the ground game, Ohio State averaged 6 yards per carry, with TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams recording over 100 yards rushing.

Michigan had its scare with Maryland in the Big House. Taulia Tagoviloa threw for 207 yards and a touchdown, but also tossed 2 ugly interceptions, including one in the fourth quarter that led to a 47-yard touchdown run from Blake Corum. He has been near impossible to stop this season, leading all FBS players in rushing touchdowns with 9.

Penn State’s hot start continued after picking up a win in SEC country against Auburn. After leading by a touchdown at halftime against Central Michigan, the Nittany Lions pounced in the second half, scoring 12 unanswered on the way to a 33-14 victory. Running back Nick Singleton remains one of college football’s more impressive freshmen while transfer wide receiver Mitchell Tinsley has filled in well for Jahan Dotson.

Georgia kept the top ranking for another week following its win over Kent State. Tennessee jumped into the top 10 following its 38-33 win over Florida. Clemson, Kentucky, Oklahoma State, and USC rounded out the middle at No. 5-8, respectively.
