Joel Klatt is 1 of the people that thinks playoff expansion will be great for college football. He explained his reasoning on ‘The Joel Klatt Show: A College Football Podcast’.
The current format has just 4 teams making the playoff. Klatt does not like this method, as it didn’t allow for more teams to get an opportunity to play for a title. He showed the numbers on why it doesn’t work in today’s game.
“Let’s get into some of the numbers as to why the 4-team playoff does not work,” said Klatt. “We’ve had 13 teams in the current format since it’s inception in the last 8 years. That’s only 10 percent of college football.”
To add to his point, Klatt showed the number of teams that would have made the playoff if the current format would have already been like the proposed 12-team playoff in the beginning. It’s safe to say that there would have been a big jump.
“If you retroactively go back in those last 8 years to 2014, 41 teams would have made the playoff,” said Klatt. “That’s nearly a third of college football, about 32 percent. I don’t care if they lose in the 1st round. You have to understand, the only way to define yourself as successful in the modern college football is to make the playoff.”
Other than the B1G teams who have already made it, 4 more could have been a part of the experience. Indiana, Iowa, Penn State, and Wisconsin would have all been in the playoff if the new format was in place from the start.
