Joel Klatt had a strong reaction to the initial 12-team College Football Playoff rankings. The former quarterback-turned-analyst identified 2 teams that he believes have little margin for error.

Indiana and BYU are both undefeated teams. The Hoosiers are 9-0 while the Cougars are 8-0. However, in the initial rankings, the Hoosiers are No. 8 and the Cougars are No. 9. This placement implies that either team would fall out of the top 12 with a single loss, according to Klatt.

“I’m looking at Indiana and BYU and I’m thinking to myself, they don’t have any margin,” explained Klatt. “Because that road is being paved by these rankings. Miami getting the brand bump and being No. 4 is set up to where they’re probably fine.”

Klatt implies that Indiana and BYU are being hurt by their lack of brand recognition. To overcome this, Klatt thinks either team would need to go undefeated to reach the CFP.

“You’re setting yourself up for a lack of margin if you’re Indiana because the committee doesn’t think very highly of them currently,” Klatt explained. “And that’s why I think it’s a problem. So you’re sitting there if you’re Indiana with Ohio State still on the schedule and you’re like, ‘wait, do we have to beat Ohio State in order to go?’ Some people would think yes. And based on these rankings, they might have to.

“BYU, where they’re at, you can’t guarantee me that even if they go to the Big 12 Championship Game, and then they were to lose that, would they still get in? I don’t know.”

Indiana will face Michigan on Saturday as it looks to move to 10-0 on the season. BYU will go on the road to face Utah in Week 11.

The rankings will be updated and released next Tuesday, November 12.
