Joel Klatt tackled a topic that is often divisive in the realm of college football recently. That topic? Which conference is the best in college football?

Before he dove into his top 3 conferences for the 2022 season, Klatt took time to break down the criteria for his list. He particularly noted he’s not interested in the worst team in each conference.

“I actually don’t really care about how bad your worst team is, I just kind of throw that out,” explained Klatt. “I’m more focused on how competitive and how deep is the middle of your conference.”

In total, Klatt has 3 major criteria:

  • 1. How good and deep is your top end?
  • 2. How competitive and deep is the middle of your conference?
  • 3. Are the major brands in your conference doing their job?

With all of those things considered, Klatt had the SEC at No. 1 and the B1G at No. 2. Klatt also took time to explain that he’s not a hater of the SEC — as some claim he is — he just does not believe the SEC needs the ridiculous narrative that is pushed consistently.

“You’re really strong as a conference, you don’t need the narrative,” Klatt explained. “Let the truth set you free.”
We’ll see if this ranking of conferences holds up at the end of the season.
