Justin Herbert sets NFL record for most passing yards through first 5 seasons with Chargers
Justin Herbert has become one of the best passers in the NFL. The former Oregon Duck led his Los Angeles Chargers team against the New England Patriots on Saturday, with the team locking down a playoff berth with a win.
Entering the game, Herbert needed just 153 yards to pass Peyton Manning’s NFL record of 20,618 passing yards through a player’s first 5 seasons. The QB passed the Hall of Famer in the 2nd quarter with a 7-yard pass to J.K. Dobbins and now officially owns the NFL record.

Manning is now in the No. 2 spot, with Jameis Winston, Dan Marino, and Andrew Luck rounding out the top 5.
Herbert entered the league as a 1st-round pick by the Chargers in the 2020 NFL Draft. The QB spent 4 seasons at Oregon and ended his college career with 10,541 passing yards, 95 TDs, and 23 INTs. The QB trails only Marcus Mariota in career passing yards, wins, and TDs with the Ducks.
After a legendary career in Eugene, Herbert immediately had high expectations placed upon him in the NFL. Herbert responded by winning the 2020 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award and setting an NFL record for passing TDs by a rookie. Since then, Herbert has 1 Pro Bowl selection and will make the playoffs for the 2nd time in his career.
The Chargers would go on to defeat the Patriots 40-7 with Herbert throwing for 281 yards and 3 TDs in the win. While the Chargers cannot win their division, they are locked into one of the 3 wild card spots.
