Kirk Ferentz suspended for Iowa season-opener, per report
Kirk Ferentz will not be on the sidelines for Iowa’s season-opener, according to reports.
Multiple outlets reported late Wednesday and early Thursday that Ferentz and wide receivers coach Jon Budmayr will receive a one-game suspension for committing a violation when recruiting Michigan transfer quarterback Cade McNamara before the portal opened in 2022. Scott Dochterman of The Athletic noted that sources did not specify if the Hawkeye coaches are serving NCAA or self-imposed suspensions.
Ferentz, who turned 69 on Aug. 1, is college football’s longest-tenured head coach, leading the Hawkeyes since 1999. He has a 196-119 record in his Iowa tenure.
The Hawkeyes are coming off a 10-win season in 2023. Iowa went 10-2 in regular-season play, stumbling only against a top-10 Penn State team and Minnesota. Ferentz’s squad finished the year with back-to-back shutout losses in the Big Ten Championship Game and Citrus Bowl, falling to Michigan (26-0) and Tennessee (35-0).
Iowa opens the 2024 season against Illinois State. FanDuel Sportsbook has the Hawkeyes favored by 23.5 points. Iowa -23.5 is priced at -115, for a $115 wager to potentially win $100 and generate a $215 payout.

ESPN’s Football Power Index gives Iowa a 92.9% chance to win against Illinois State and start the year 1-0. The FPI ranks Iowa No. 37 among FBS teams and projects a 7-5 season for Ferentz’s squad.
Ferentz would be back on the sidelines for the CyHawk rivalry showdown with Iowa State. This year’s matchup is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
DraftKings Sportsbook has set the over/under line for Iowa’s season win total at 8. Over 8 wins is priced at -130 with the under priced at +110. If the FPI projection holds, a 7-win season would turn a $100 wager on the under into a $210 payout.
I can confirm that Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz and WR coach Jon Budmayr will be suspended for the season-opener against Illinois State due to a recruiting violation.
