Kirk Herbstreit seems to take quite a bit of heat throughout the college football season. When one fanbase isn’t calling him a “homer,” another is accusing him of having an agenda. It’s gotten to the point where the college football analyst had to say something.

For whatever reason, Herbstreit seems to get labeled as an SEC apologist and an Ohio State homer all at the same time. It’s weird, but it’s true. Recently, Herbie joined Connor O’Gara and Chris Marler on the SDS Podcast this week and talked about having Ohio State as is No. 1 team through five weeks.

Unprompted, Herbstreit had to clear the air on something first.

“A little bit of background on people getting frustrated on things I might say. I’m the same guy that’s an Ohio State alum that last year, I said that Georgia, despite losing to Alabama, deserved to go in ahead of Ohio State into the Playoff because I was just being honest,” Herbstreit said. “The year before that, when everybody thought I had walked off the desk because they put Alabama in, and I was mad that they put Alabama in, no, no, no. I was happy they put Alabama in. I walked off because I was shocked they did the right thing by putting one of the four best teams into the Playoff in Alabama.

“I just say what I think and if you agree with me, great, but if you don’t, please understand that I don’t have an agenda. Most Ohio State fans hate me because I don’t always go to bat for Ohio State.”

Herbstreit does tend to provide a little more fair coverage of college football than most. For the most part, his criticism and his praise tends to come from an unbiased perspective.

Such is life as a college football analyst. With social media around, everyone involved with covering the sport is considered to have some sort of agenda. But Herbstreit is clarifying, once again, that he has no agenda.

But you know the claims will start flying again when the College Football Playoff rankings are released at the end of the month.
