Kirk Herbstreit has weighed in on the scope of the 2022 college football season. When it comes to the B1G, he sees a “wide open” race to the conference championship.

When turning in his 2022 Preseason Herbie Awards for ESPN College Football, Herbstreit predicted the divisional races in the B1G. Out of the East, Herbstreit expects Ryan Day to engineer Ohio State back to Indianapolis.

“My sense is that Ryan Day is a master motivator… The way (Ohio State) lost up in Ann Arbor, it has really fueled the team this offseason,” explained Herbstreit. “They get Michigan at home. I think Michigan has a great season, but coming into Columbus I think will be tough.”

Out of the West, Herbstreit officially went with Scott Frost’s Nebraska squad. Herbstreit admitted the struggles of last season but likes the talent on the roster, particularly at quarterback.

“I’ve got Nebraska… remember, they were 3-9 last year… I think they can have a great year with Casey Thompson at quarterback,” Herbstreit said.

In the end, he did predict that Ohio State will come out on top over Nebraska in Indianapolis, returning the conference crown to Ryan Day and the Buckeyes. We’ll have to see if that holds up over the course of the season.
