Lee Corso has been elected to the National Sports Media Hall of Fame.

The longtime broadcaster was surprised with the news by his College GameDay co-hosts on Monday. Rece Davis announced the “important piece of news” at the beginning of the broadcast.

 

Corso has been a featured analyst on GameDay since the program’s inception in 1987. Corso join fellow anchors Desmond Howard, Rece Davis, Pat McAfee and Kirk Herbstreit for matchups across the football landscape. For many, Corso is a staple of college football, and his known for wearing the mascot helmet of his weekly game day winner picks.

Corso has suffered several medical setbacks across the years, including a stroke in 2009 that left him with partial paralysis and speech issues. The 87 year-old analyst missed several games this season due to what ESPN called “a health issue.”

Prior to his transition to anchor, Corso head football coach at the University of Louisville, where he serviced from from 1969 to 1972. Corso was also head coach at Indiana University Bloomington from 1973 to 1982. He ended his coaching career at Northern Illinois University in 1984.
