Week 1 has nearly come to a close in college football.

The opening weekend has been a fun one, and when looking at the AP top 25, not a bunch of upsets happened. In fact, every team outside of No. 11 Oregon — who lost to No. 16 Auburn — has won their game to this point.

However, the ESPN FPI — which gives teams a percentage of chance to win a given football game each week — was wrong on quite a bit. We all know that the SEC believes that it is king. The ESPN FPI doesn’t discourage the notion, either.

But again, the FPI had plenty of mishaps in Week 1. Let’s take a look at the SEC games that became straight up wrong calls, as well as a few games that were on the brink of being upsets:

  • Tennessee vs. Georgia State: 97.1% — Tennessee lost
  • Missouri at Wyoming: 87.7% — Missouri lost
  • South Carolina vs. North Carolina (in Charlotte): 78.9% — South Carolina lost
  • Ole Miss at Memphis: 51.6% — Ole Miss lost

Here are some of the close calls that the FPI nearly got wrong:

  • Arkansas vs. Portland State: 97.9% — Arkansas won by 7
  • Mississippi State vs. Louisiana (in New Orleans): 93.7% — Mississippi State won by 10

Now of course, there were games that clearly went the SEC’s way. Alabama dominated Duke and Auburn topped Oregon. It’s not as though the SEC had an atrocious week. However, outside of the conference’s top six teams that rank in the top 25, there was a bit of a struggle.

One could argue that the SEC has some great teams at the top of the conference. The overall depth, however, may be a bit lacking.
