LOOK: UCF was the CFB Playoff champion according to this ESPN graphic
The UCF national championship conversation has trickled into the 2018 season. Kind of.
Thanks to an ESPN image mix-up during Friday night’s matchup between UCF and FAU, people were talking about the Knights and a national championship once again. It’s a debate that’s been ongoing since the end of last season.
ESPN created an image comparing Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and UCF quarterback McKenzie Milton, both of whom are from Hawai’i. So what’s the problem? The graphic used swapped Alabama’s College Football Playoff title with UCF’s “claimed” national championship.
As you can imagine, UCF was very appreciative of the switch. Alabama fans were (probably) not happy.
Sure, we’ll take it 😏 pic.twitter.com/BRyiZqSGCH

Since finishing the 2017 season undefeated, winning the AAC title and defeating Auburn in the Peach Bowl, UCF has claimed itself a national champion. That claim has been met with a ton of resistance.
However, the NCAA has even recognized UCF’s 2017 season as national championship-worthy in its record book. So, like it or not, the Knights are national champions.
Just not CFB Playoff champions, like the ESPN graphic suggests.
