This prediction would definitely be an unprecedented move in the world of college football.

During a Wednesday discussion on the Paul Finebaum Show, MELT Founder and CEO Vince Thompson discussed some of the top quarterbacks in the country. Most notably, Thompson gave his 2020 predictions for Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa and Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence.

He believes Tagovailoa will return to school following his season-ending injury in order to boost his NFL stock with a healthy season. However, Thompson actually sees Lawrence sitting out an entire season to remain healthy and begin a marketing campaign.

“I still will state to the fact that I think Tua comes back next year, and I’m going to give you one more prediction today: Trevor Lawrence sits out next year,” claimed Thompson.

“That’s an incredible statement…especially if he wins (the national championship). Even if he doesn’t, he’s the No. 1 pick,” said Finebaum.

“So what’s the upside? Unless he gets a $100 million insurance policy,” questioned Thompson.

MELT is described by their website as “one of the nation’s largest independent sports/culinary/entertainment marketing agencies” that does work with ESPN’s College GameDay and many top sports leagues across the country. One of Thompson’s biggest points in claiming Lawrence could sit out 2020 is that Lawrence would preserve his draft stock while also creating the potential to begin earning money with his own marketing strategy outside of the NCAA restrictions.

While Thompson is a knowledgeable source, it still seems unlikely that a potential Heisman candidate would sit out a full season in order to prepare for the NFL. After all, would Lawrence really be taken No. 1 overall after not playing competitively for a full season?
