Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer believes the B1G made the right decision in postponing the 2020 football season. In an interview on MSNBC on Wednesday morning, she said the conference chose to protect the student-athletes and their families.

Whitmer was asked during the program Morning Joe how she felt about the decision. While she made it clear that she’s a big fan of the sport, she does believe the B1G made the right decision by waiting until a later date.

“I love football. I wanted to be a sportscaster. That was my original plan. I’m a [Michigan] State grad and I got a kid at the University of Michigan,” Whitmer said. “The fact of the matter is the B1G made a decision based on the best epidemiology.

“I think we need to respect the decision they made to keep their student-athletes safe and families safe. I think making this a political question really undermines the seriousness of this issue and how critical it is that we follow science and we do what we need to do to protect people.”

Recently, the B1G’s decision has become extremely political.

President Donald Trump tweeted out last week that he had a “productive conversation” with B1G commissioner Kevin Warren about starting the football season immediately. Over the weekend, Trump tweeted again, saying that things were looking “really good” for the season, though cited he wasn’t getting cooperation from states like Illinois, Michigan and Maryland.

Whitmer said there’s no doubt football can return at the college level soon. However, right now, she says safety is the top priority.

“We can play football again, there’s no question about that,” Whitmer said. “But we gotta be safe right here and right now.”
