Michigan and Purdue were picked atop an annual Big Ten media poll, as voted on by the league’s beat writers.
The poll is run by Buckeye Extra’s Adam Jardy and The Athletic’s Brendan Quinn. Two beat writers from each program participated in the poll.
In this year’s poll, Michigan and Purdue finished tied with 373 points each — with the Wolverines getting the nod based on having one more first place vote. Of the 28 available first place votes, Michigan received 13, Purdue got 12 and Illinois picked up 3.

Illinois’ Kofi Cockburn was picked to win Big Ten Player of the Year in the preseason poll. He was an All-American last season and heavily considered starting his professional career this year.
Michigan’s Caleb Houstan was selected as B1G Freshman of the Year. The 5-star recruit is a potential lottery pick in next year’s NBA Draft.
The 2021-22 college basketball season begins in early November.
