Through the first 20 minutes of Saturday’s in-state rivalry bout between Michigan and No. 10 Michigan State, it appeared that the game might come down to the wire. But an impressive second half start from Tom Izzo’s Spartans fueled a blowout victory in East Lansing.

Michigan State owned a 39-35 advantage at halftime to close out a back-and-forth clash at the Breslin Center. Out of the locker room, though, the Spartans went on a 14-3 run through the first 7 minutes, building a 53-38 lead and never looking back.

Defensive pressure from Michigan State proved to be too much and the Spartans shot 55.4% from the floor on their way to an 83-67 win over Michigan. The Spartans led by as many as 20 in the second half.

It was a huge victory for Izzo’s team, which dropped a road game to Illinois earlier in the week.

Max Christie, Joey Hauser and Malik Hall led the way in the scoring department for the Spartans for the day. Christie had a team-high 16 points and Hauser added 14. Hall came in off the bench to add 15.

AJ Hoggard was outstanding off the bench, as well, dishing out 10 assists and scoring 11 points in the victory for the game’s only double-double.

The Spartans distributed the ball well throughout the game, getting 30 buckets on 18 assists. They did have 13 turnovers in the contest, a vast majority coming in the first 20 minutes.

Hunter Dickinson played well for Michigan, scoring a game-high 25 points in the loss. Moussa Diabate added 11 points and Caleb Houstan added 1 for the Wolverines.

Michigan’s biggest issues throughout the game came on its shooting from behind the arc. The Wolverines converted just 15.8% of shots from behind the 3-point line, hitting 3-of-19 attempts.

Michigan State improved to 16-4 on the season and is 7-2 in the B1G standings. Michigan falls to 10-8 and 4-4 in conference competition.
