Former North Carolina defensive lineman Tommy Davis died in a tragic motorcycle accident on Thursday, according to multiple reports. He was 37.
Davis was a member of the North Carolina football team from 2002 and 2005, where he was a star defensive end. The Dudley, North Carolina native was undrafted in the 2006 NFL Draft but signed free agent contract deals with the New Orleans Saints, New York Giants and Washington Redskins.
The University of North Carolina football program released a statement on Davis’s death.
“We are shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic death of one of our Tar Heel brothers, Tommy Davis,” the statement read. “The Carolina Football Family extends its deepest condolences to Tommy’s family and friends.”
Davis started in every game for the Tar Heels during the 2004 and 2005 seasons, totaling 18 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks in those two years. He was also a part-time starter during his first two seasons with the programs.
Following his football career, Davis spent two years as a graduate assistant at North Carolina. He was the defensive line coach at St. Joseph’s College in Indiana, a Division II program.
