The NCAA will allow expanded virtual instruction time between Division I coaches and student-athletes, the association said in a release on Thursday. The increased time will apply for all sports.

“At the recommendation of the Collegiate Commissioners Association Compliance Administrators, committee members voted to allow teams in all sports to require up to eight hours per week of virtual nonphysical countable activities like film review, chalk talks and team meetings,” The NCAA said in a statement. “At the request of the Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the committee also will require student-athletes to be provided at least one day off per week.”

The policy is expected to be revisited in the month of May for any possible adjustments and changes. The news comes as student-athletes and coaches are still prohibited from meeting face-to-face due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Sports across the country have been halted at the amateur and professional levels due to the ongoing public health crisis. Virtual instruction is a way for student-athletes and coaches to stay in communication while away from campus.
