It’s never easy changing a culture of mediocrity, even at a place like Nebraska — which does have a great college football tradition to fall back on.

Even still, Scott Frost is finding out that some old habits are hard to break, and right now for the Cornhuskers that old habit is playing uninspired, if not bad, football. Sure, he didn’t inherit a stacked roster from Mike Riley, but Frost’s squad entered this season with plenty of hype — even in a very good Big Ten — and so far this season all they’ve been able to muster up is a 0-3 record.

Nebraska’s first game of the season against Akron was canceled due to a major rain delay, and one wonders if the Huskers would be 0-4 had that game gone on. Remember, the Zips ended up beating Northwestern in Week 3.

So yeah, it hasn’t been a good start for Nebraska, which just dropped a painful game to Michigan by the score of 56-10.

All the hype from the preseason is gone. All the potential, while it may be still there, is a distant memory. Scott leading UCF to an unofficial “national title” last season and then coming back to Nebraska as the prodigal son, here to save the day, feels like a storyline from ages ago — not just a few weeks ago.

Still, Nebraska should remain hopeful, because anyone who’s in this thing for the long-run knows that it’s a process, and that process takes time. Scott needs time to develop his system, recruit his guys, and ultimately instill a winning culture back in Lincoln.

For his part, athletic director Bill Moos remains confident that the Huskers can get back on track, even this season.

Coming up next for Nebraska is 1-3 Purdue at home. That has the makings of a win on paper, but nothing is guaranteed in this Big Ten.
