Negative 38 yards? Boise State managed to pull off the absolute worst punt of all time

File this one under “a punter’s worst nightmare.”
Special teams can be a tricky area for some football teams. Fans see it all the time. Many kickers, punters, and long snappers are anonymous figures, often taken for granted until thrust into a key spotlight.
For most punters, the worst thing that can happen is a fumbled snap or blocked punt. That is usually the height of embarrassment for a special teams player.
Unfortunately for Boise State, they found a new way to top that. On this punt, the angle was off and the kick was drilled right into the back of one of the blockers in the backfield.
The result was a punt that registered as NEGATIVE 38 yards after being recovered:
