Kelly Bryant decided it was in his best interest to transfer after he was replaced by Trevor Lawrence as the starting quarterback at Clemson. Now, Dabo Swinney has decided it’s in his best interest to decline his former quarterback of a national championship ring.

Bryant, who transferred to Missouri to finish his college career, spent the first four games with Clemson before being replaced by Lawrence as the starter. With the ability to utilize a redshirt season to retain one more year of eligibility, Bryant opted to move on from the Tigers for the chance to play.

That choice will cost the former Clemson starter a ring from last year’s 15-0 national title run.

“He wasn’t on the team. You’ve gotta be on the team to get a ring,” Swinney said in an interview with ESPN. “I love Kelly and appreciate what he did for us, but he decided to move on.”

Bryant was 16-2 as the starter at Clemson before being benched for Lawrence. He is expected to be the starter for Missouri this season.

Sometimes coaches will make an exception when it comes to championship rings. Bryant was in the program for a long time and helped the team win several games throughout his career. But Swinney is an old school guy, and Bryant didn’t finish what he started.

Apparently that means his hand will be a little lighter.
