No. 20 Washington opens season with embarrassing loss to FCS opponent
An upset from an FCS opponent isn’t uncommon, but it is rarer to see that FCS team defeat a ranked FBS opponent. On Saturday, the Montana Grizzlies shocked the #20 Washington Huskies in Seattle with a 13-7 score.

The Huskies outgained the Grizzlies in total yards accounted for 291-to-232. The biggest factor for the Huskies was their three turnovers, two of them in the second half. After scoring in their first drive of the game, the Huskies never found the end zone for the remainder of the game. Huskies quarterback Dylan Morris threw three interceptions, which was costly to the Huskies. This loss to the Grizzlies is only the second loss for head coach Jimmy Lake in his second season at Washington.
So far in this 2021 season, there have been six games where an FCS team has defeated an FBS team, four more than last season. This loss from Washington is the first time a ranked FBS team has lost to a team in the FCS since the North Dakota State Bison upset the #13 Iowa Hawkeyes 23-21.
Next Saturday, the Washington Huskies (0-1) will travel to Ann Arbor to face the Michigan Wolverines. This upcoming game will be the 13th time Washington and Michigan will meet and their first since 2002.
