Mack Brown is officially making a return to Chapel Hill.

On Monday, several reports surfaced stating that Brown and North Carolina had come to an agreement, making the 67-year-old head coach the new leader of the Tar Heels. Tuesday morning, the university confirmed the reports.

In a tweet that was sent out early Tuesday, North Carolina officially welcomed Brown back to the Tar Heel State. It will be his second stint with the program.

Brown coached at North Carolina from 1988 through 1997 and completely altered the direction of the program. He turned an ACC bottom-feeder into a regular bowl contender during his 10-year run. He compiled a 69-46-1 record in his first stint with the Tar Heels, leading them to six 10-win seasons and six bowl appearances.

With so much success in Chapel Hill, Brown was offered one of the most prominent coaching opportunities in the country, taking over at the University of Texas for the 1998 season. While in Austin, Brown totaled 158 wins, took the Longhorns to 15 bowl games in 16 seasons and won a national title in 2005. He also led Texas to the BCS Championship Game in 2009, a game the Longhorns lost to Alabama.

Details of Brown’s contract were also revealed on Tuesday. Chip Patterson of CBS Sports reported that Brown will receive a five-year contract with a base salary of $750,000 with $2 million in supplemental compensation.

Brown has worked as a college football analyst at ESPN since his time at Texas came to an end.
