Oklahoma has decided to make a change on its coaching staff following a 48-45 loss to Texas in the Red River Showdown on Saturday.

Sunday evening, reports started surfacing that defensive coordinator Mike Stoops was fired following Oklahoma’s loss. Those reports were later confirmed by multiple outlets late Sunday night.

The news was first reported by James Hale of KREF Radio and was confirmed by Ryan Aber of The Oklahoman.

Ruffin McNeil will take over on the defensive coordinator position, according to Stadium’s Brett McMurphy.

Stoops, the younger brother of former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops, had served as the defensive coordinator since the 2012 season. He was also previously on staff from 1999-2003.

The Sooners rank seventh in points allowed this season, surrendering an average of 27.3 points per game. On Saturday, they fell into a 45-24 hole in the third quarter against Texas and needed the final 15 minutes to tie the game at 45-45.

Cameron Dicker kicked a game-winning field goal for the Longhorns.

Prior to serving as Oklahoma’s defensive coordinator, Stoops was the head coach at Arizona from 2004-2011. In eight seasons with the Wildcats, he was 41-50 and appeared in three bowl games. He was fired midway through the 2011 season.

Stoops played college football at Iowa from 1982-1984 and started his coaching career with the Hawkeyes, serving as the defensive backs and linebackers coach in 1991.
