Oregon reportedly hosting top-rated portal RB Makhi Hughes
Oregon will host Tulane transfer running back Makhi Hughes on a visit this weekend, according to a report from On3’s Hayes Fawcett.
Hughes is viewed as one of the top available players, regardless of position, in the transfer portal. He is ranked as the No. 7 running back in the portal by 247Sports. Hughes’s younger brother is Na’eem Offord, a 5-star cornerback signee for the Ducks out of the 2025 class.
The former Green Wave back entered the portal on Dec. 27. He has 2 seasons of eligibility remaining after 3 spent with Tulane.
Hughes signed with Tulane in the 2022 class. He was ranked as the 87th-best running back in his class and sat outside the top 1,000 overall prospects in the industry-generated 247 Composite. While others had interest, only 3 power conference schools offered him a scholarship out of high school.
He sat out the 2022 season with an injury and then stepped into a major role in 2023. The 5-foot-11 back topped 100 yards in 7 of his final 10 games as a redshirt freshman and ended the 2023 campaign with 1,378 yards and 7 scores on the ground.
In 2024, he averaged 5.3 yards per carry while rushing for 1,401 yards and 15 touchdowns. Hughes had 128 rushing yards and 37 receiving yards earlier this season against Kansas State. He ran for a career-best 195 yards against North Texas on Oct. 26. Entering the postseason, Hughes ranked 10th nationally in rushing.
This season, Pro Football Focus graded Hughes at 90.8 as a runner, the seventh-best mark among qualified FBS running backs. He was among the nation’s leaders in yards after contact this season (1,018 yards) and has forced 130 missed tackles over the last 2 years.
Both of Oregon’s top 2 backs, Jordan James and Noah Whittington, are eligible to enter the 2025 NFL Draft. Should either leave, Hughes could step into a major role right away with the Ducks next season.
Oregon also has Jay Harris, Da’Juan Riggs, and Jayden Limar to compete for snaps in 2025. With Dante Moore taking the reins at the quarterback spot and several key pieces around the offense departing, Hughes would be a welcome addition to an otherwise young group.
