Payton Pritchard makes NBA history with unreal performance in Celtics win
Payton Pritchard has not started a single game for the Boston Celtics this season. In 328 career appearances for the franchise, he holds 14 career starts. Throughout his tenure in Boston, the former Oregon standout has been a role player and a glue guy.
On Wednesday night, against the Portland Trail Blazers, Boston needed Pritchard to step into a new role. Three starters, including Jayson Tatum, missed the game. Pritchard responded with one of the most unique performances in NBA history.
In a 128-118 win, Pritchard scored 43 points off the bench on 14-of-20 shooting. He made 10 of his 16 attempts from 3-point range and made all 5 of his free throws. He also added 10 rebounds and 5 assists without a single turnover in 41 minutes.
Pritchard is the first player in NBA history with at least 40 points, 10 3-pointers, and 10 rebounds in a regulation game.
He’s also the first player to record at least 40 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists in a game off the bench since starters were first tracked in 1970-71.
And he recorded his 20th game this season with at least 5 makes from 3-point range, the most in Celtics history.
With teammate Derrick White scoring 41 points as well, the Boston guards also became the first pair of teammates in NBA history to each record their first career 40-point game in the same game. They are also the first duo in NBA history to each make 9 or more 3-pointers in the same game.
Pritchard was born in Tualatin, Oregon. He played high school basketball for West Linn before appearing in 144 games across 4 seasons with Oregon. To make NBA history against the team he grew up watching had to be sweet.
But there are even more layers to his performance.
According to OptaSTATS, Pritchard might be standing alone for a while.
