Predicting every B1G team’s record after Week 1
B1G Football is back in full force. Some teams had question marks during the offseason, others became question marks once the games started.
We can also start projecting each team’s record through the end of the season again — even with some slight overreactions after one game.
Iowa — 10-2
The Hawkeyes looked good against Indiana in their 34-6 victory in Week 1. Like, really good. Kirk Ferentz might have something more special than we think. Still, a couple rivalry games against Iowa State and Wisconsin might be too much.
Don’t sleep on Iowa, though.
Illinois — 3-9
Remember last week when Illinois looked like a surprise team in the B1G? Not so much this week. The Illini lost to UTSA, which might be a coming-back-to-earth for Bret Bielema’s team.
It’s going to be that kind of season in Champaign.
Indiana — 6-6
Iowa steamrolled Indiana in the season opener, a 34-6 Hawkeyes’ win. The offense didn’t score at all and Michael Penix Jr. — in his first game back from an ACL tear — went 14-for-31 passing for 156 yards and 3 interceptions.
Is it time to panic in Bloomington? Not quite. But the Hoosiers’ first act in their follow-up to 2020 wasn’t good at all.
Maryland — 6-6
Give Taulia Tagovailoa the Heisman after his 26-for-36, 332-yard, 3-touchdown day. Maryland football is back.
Alright, back to reality. Yes, Maryland looked good in Week 1’s upset of West Virginia. But we need to see more of this out of Tagovailoa to tell if the Terps are for real.
Michigan — 7-5
Michigan, predictably, looked good in its Week 1 win over Western Michigan. But the schedule’s not all cupcake games.
A 7-5 record is a good bar for Jim Harbaugh’s squad — and maybe enough to keep his job. (Too far?)
Michigan State — 6-6
Michigan State beat Northwestern for the second year in a row — and looked good doing it. Still, they were going up against a Wildcats defense under new leadership and set up for a slightly down year.
Although the run game looked good, we need to see more of it from Mel Tucker’s squad before raising the bar.
Minnesota — 8-4
Even if Mo Ibrahim’s ready to come back and lead the Minnesota offense, 8-4 is a reasonable expectation. The Golden Gophers drew a pretty favorable schedule and even if Ibrahim’s healthy, they probably lose the last three games.
Although that Indiana game might be more interesting than we think.
Nebraska — 3-9
After a worrisome showing in Week 0, Nebraska bounced back for a Week 1 win over Fordham. Does that mean the Huskers aren’t as bad as we think?
Pump the brakes. There’s a lot of football left — and reason to wonder if Nebraska can finally get on track under Scott Frost.
Northwestern — 7-5
The vaunted Northwestern defense looked, in no uncertain terms, bad against Michigan State this week. A lot more questions surround the reigning B1G West champions now, notably on defense.
Still, there’s a route to 7 wins once — if? — the defense gets rolling.
Ohio State — 12-0
Do you really need an explanation? If you do, here it is: Ohio State is still great.
Moving on.
Penn State — 8-4
Penn State picked up a huge upset win over Wisconsin in the season opener, providing plenty of momentum going forward.
Feasibly, the Nittany Lions could go 5-0 before coming back down to earth. This team is definitely better than last year’s.
Purdue — 4-8
Expectations aren’t particularly high for Purdue this year — even after beating Oregon State to open the season. Four wins sounds about right for the Boilermakers.
Rutgers — 4-8
Even a hurricane-induced postponement couldn’t slow down Rutgers against Temple. But was that game enough to sway our thoughts on the Scarlet Knights?
Not really.
Wisconsin — 9-3
The loss to Penn State hurts — a lot.
Still, Wisconsin’s a very good team in the B1G. Just maybe not as good as we thought. Either way, 9 wins is very much in play.
