Ranking B1G QBs entering Week 12: Will Howard, Kurtis Rourke sizzling
Week 11 saw Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel set a new NCAA mark, Washington’s Will Rogers get benched and Davis Warren and the Michigan offense continue to struggle.
Meanwhile, Kurtis Rourke and Indiana continued to make history.
Let’s check in on each B1G QB heading into Week 12:
18. Jack Lausch, Northwestern
Lausch and the Wildcats had a bye last week and are getting set to host Ohio State at the friendly confines of Wrigley Field this weekend. The last time David Braun’s team was in action, Lausch led the ‘Cats to an overtime win at Purdue to snap their 2-game losing streak. He finished 23-of-35 passing for a career-high 250 yards and the game-clinching touchdown. A big test awaits against the Buckeyes, though.
Northwestern has only thrown 5 TD passes this season — it ranks 130th in the country — but Lausch has thrown all of them.
Last week’s ranking: 18
17. Brendan Sullivan, Iowa
Sullivan sprained his ankle in the 3rd quarter against UCLA on a pass that was picked off in the Hawkeyes’ 20-17 loss to the Bruins. Jackson Stratton came in and led the Hawkeyes on a 13-play touchdown drive to tie it at 17-17 early in the 4th quarter. Sullivan went 6-of-9 passing for 157 yards and 2 interceptions in the loss. The Hawkeyes will monitor his status throughout the week, but they do have a bye this week before returning to action in Week 13 at Maryland.
Last week’s ranking: 17
16. Aidan Chiles, Michigan State
The Spartans had a bye last week following a 47-10 loss to Indiana. The Oregon State transfer threw 2 more interceptions in that loss and was knocked out of the game in the 3rd quarter when he was hit while throwing the ball away. Turnovers once again held back the offense. Chiles threw his 11th interception of the season, and MSU has more turnovers (18) than offensive touchdowns (17) this fall.
Last week’s ranking: 16
15. Davis Warren, Michigan
It was another tough offensive showing for the Wolverines in their loss to Indiana, though the defense held its own in a close win for the Hoosiers. Warren went 16-of-32 with 137 yards, while the Wolverines rushed for just 69 yards. The defense was very good in the loss, making it even more frustrating because the lack of offense has been costly. The Wolverines had just 1 touchdown in 3 red-zone trips and came up a yard short on 4th-and-10 with 95 seconds to play.
Michigan is tied for 13th in the B1G with just 10 TD passes; Warren has thrown 5 of them.
Will this team even make a bowl game?
Last week’s ranking: 15
14. Hudson Card, Purdue
Card had just 108 passing yards and threw an interception on 9-of-19 passing in the team’s 45-0 shutout loss to Ohio State. The Boilermakers lost their 8th game in a row, their longest losing streak since they dropped 10 straight in 2013. And the loss to OSU was the 2nd time in the last 3 games Purdue has been shut out. Card is tied for 13th in the B1G with 8 TD passes.
Last week’s ranking: 14
13. Braedyn Locke, Wisconsin
Locke will need to be at his best if the Badgers have any chance for an upset of Oregon in Madison this week. Luke Fickell’s team is coming off a bye, which was much needed because the last time we saw the Badgers they were being manhandled by Iowa 42-10. Locke was 15-of-29 passing for just 137 yards in the loss. Locke also is tied for 13th in the B1G with 8 TD passes. Can they keep up with the high-flying Ducks?
Last week’s ranking: 13
12. Dylan Raiola, Nebraska
We’ll see if this Cornhuskers offense gets a boost with former Houston and West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen now serving as the Cornhuskers’ offensive coordinator. Holgorsen joined the staff last week and spent the first part of the season with TCU. Quarterback play will certainly be at the center of attention this week with both Nebraska and USC coming off byes. Raiola is expected to play after injuring his back in a loss to UCLA, which was the team’s 3rd consecutive loss. After a nice start to his collegiate career, he has just 1 touchdown and 6 picks in his past 4 games. He’s 12th in the B1G with 10 TD passes. Meanwhile, the Trojans have turned to UNLV transfer Jayden Maiava.
Last week’s ranking: 12
11. Ethan Garbers, UCLA
Garbers had an interesting night as the Bruins rallied for a 20-17 win against Iowa. He completed 21-of-34 passes for 204 yards and 2 touchdowns, but he had 3 first-half turnovers. His 2 interceptions in the opening quarter led to 10 Iowa points. The senior also fumbled at the Iowa 3-yard line. But he rallied the Bruins with a pair of scoring passes in the 2nd quarter, and UCLA won its 3rd straight.
Garbers is tied for 10th in the B1G with 12 TD passes.
Last week’s ranking: 11
10. Jayden Maiava, USC
Put an asterisk by this ranking: The Trojans demoted starter Miller Moss and promoted Maiava, who transferred to USC before the 2024 season after 1 year at UNLV. In 9 games, Moss threw 18 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. But offensive line woes have also plagued the Trojans, so we’ll see how much of a difference Maiava makes.
It’s Lincoln Riley, so you can expect that they’ll still throw the ball better than most. USC is 4th in the B1G with 18 TD passes this season. Of course, Moss had all 18 of those.
Last week’s ranking: N/R
9. Will Rogers, Washington
Last Saturday’s 35-6 loss at Penn State was arguably U-Dub’s worst loss of the season. The Nittany Lions kept coach Jedd Fisch’s team out of the end zone for the first time this season, and Fisch made a quarterback change at halftime when his team was down 28-0. Freshman Demond Williams Jr. helped lead 2 field goal drives, but the Huskies were outgained in total yards 486-193. Fisch said after the game he believes Rogers will start Friday against UCLA.
Rogers is 8th in the B1G with 13 TD passes.
Last week’s ranking: 5
8. Athan Kaliakmanis, Rutgers
The Minnesota transfer connected with Dymere Miller on first-half touchdown passes of 1 and 17 yards before finding Ian Strong for a score and a 21-16 lead with 7:41 to play to help the Scarlet Knights snap a 4-game losing streak and score a 26-19 victory over the Golden Gophers. Rutgers needs to win 1 of its final 3 games to become bowl-eligible. It plays next at Maryland.
Last week’s ranking: 9
7. Billy Edwards Jr., Maryland
Edwards Jr. completed just 50% of his throws in Maryland’s 39-18 loss to Oregon last week. He threw for a touchdown and had 2 interceptions en route to 206 passing yards. The Terrapins host Rutgers this Saturday and have lost 5 of their past 6 games.
Edwards, for the most part, has been fine. He’s 3rd in the B1G with 2,520 passing yards and tied for 6th with 14 TD passes.
Last week’s ranking: 7
6. Max Brosmer, Minnesota
Brosmer finished 27-of-45 passing for 262 yards in a 26-19 loss to Rutgers last week. He was able to lead 3 4th-quarter comeback victories this season, but a Golden Gophers fumble caused by Rutgers linebacker Tyreem Powell ultimately did them in. Minnesota, which had just 35 rushing yards on 19 carries, has a bye week before playing host to Penn State.
Brosmer is tied for 6th in the B1G with 14 TD passes.
Last week’s ranking: 8
5. Luke Altmyer, Illinois
The Fighting Illini had a bye last week in preparation for their home tilt against Michigan State. The last time we saw Altmyer, he went 20-of-33 passing for 226 yards and a touchdown, but he lost 2 fumbles in a 25-17 loss to Minnesota.
Altmyer is 5th in the B1G with 16 TD passes.
Last week’s ranking: 6
4. Drew Allar, Penn State
Allar and the Nittany Lions bounced back nicely from their loss to Ohio State in a White Out 35-6 win over Washington. Allar led the Nittany Lions to 4 consecutive touchdowns to open the game. He finished 20-of-28 for 220 yards and a touchdown. Penn State totaled 486 yards against the Huskies and Allar surpassed 2,000 passing yards for the season. He has 13 touchdown passes and 5 interceptions on the year.
Last week’s ranking: 4
3. Will Howard, Ohio State
Howard had a ball in Ohio State’s 45-0 win over Purdue. He threw 3 touchdown passes and rushed for another score, hooking up with Jeremiah Smith, Gee Scott Jr. and Emeka Egbuka on scoring passes. He was 21-of-26 for 260 yards with a 1-yard touchdown run on 4th down to begin the scoring for the Buckeyes. Ohio State plays Northwestern at Wrigley Field this week.
Howard is tied for the B1G lead with 22 TD passes.
Last week’s ranking: 3
2. Kurtis Rourke, Indiana
Rourke and the Hoosiers looked like their normal selves in the first half of last Saturday’s win over Michigan. But they needed to rely on their defense in the second half to ensure victory. Rourke threw 2 touchdown passes and led 2 late drives for both a field goal and to run out the clock in a 20-15 victory. IU is enjoying its first 10-win season in school history. Rourke was 17-of-28 with 206 yards.
He’s 3rd in the B1G with 21 TD passes but also has thrown 1 fewer INT (4) than the co-leaders.
Last week’s ranking: 2
1. Dillon Gabriel, Oregon
Gabriel broke the NCAA record for total career touchdowns in a 39-18 home win over Maryland this past Saturday night. His 179 total scores broke Case Keenum’s record of 178 at Houston from 2007-11. He added another scoring pass later in the game. The Ducks didn’t look their best, racking up 12 penalties for 95 yards. But Gabriel was efficient with 183 yards on 23-of-34 passing to help the Ducks win their 14th straight at home.
Gabriel shares the B1G lead with 22 TD passes and leads the league with 2,848 passing yards.
