Final Score: Nebraska 13 Northwestern 10

Brief Recap: The game was tied at 10-10 in the fourth quarter. Early on in the final 15-minute period, Nebraska QB Adrian Martinez was lost for the remainder of the game with a knee injury. In came Noah Vedral to lead the way — a former UCF QB under Scott Frost while in Central Florida. A late interception (despite an obvious pass interference not being called) helped aid Vedral to get the Huskers into scoring position to kick a 25-yard game-winning field goal as time expired.

Key Moment: With 1:00 left in regulation, Northwestern was looking to go down the field and potentially win the game. However, Northwestern QB Aidan Smith’s pass was intercepted by Nebraska DB Lamar Jackson, which then set up the game-winning field goal.

Key Stat: Northwestern had one turnover while Nebraska had none. The one turnover led to the game-winning score. One can make the argument that Nebraska’s offense struggled mightily all game long and especially when Martinez went out in the final quarter due to injury. However, the Huskers never shot themselves in the foot, which is something Northwestern can’t say.

Key Player: Nebraska running back Wan’Dale Robinson. Robinson had seven rushes for 44 yards and a TD, but more importantly, caught seven passes for 123 yards. Robinson had a 32-yard reception with 52 seconds left to get the Huskers into field goal range.

What it means for Nebraska: Martinez went out with an apparent knee injury. So did wide receiver JD Spielman, who did not play in the second half of this game. Nebraska is 4-2 overall and 2-1 in Big Ten play. The win may come at a cost, though, due to the aforementioned injuries. As of now, the Huskers are still in the thick of things in the Big Ten West division, though question marks surround the team.

What it means for Northwestern: The Wildcats went with quarterback Aidan Smith in this game as opposed to Hunter Johnson, who was reportedly at around 75 percent, but available to play. Smith didn’t play horrific football, but he did only help lead Northwestern to 10 points against Nebraska. The offensive woes continued and the defense couldn’t do enough to help pull out a win. Northwestern is now 1-4 overall and 0-3 in Big Ten play before its bye on Oct. 12.
