Report: 1-year waiver to expand football signing limit imminent
It looks like there’s going to be a 1-year waiver to expand the signing limit when it comes to recruits committing to a school.
According to Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated, coaches would now be able to replace 7 players who leave for the transfer portal. That means there can be a max number of 32 players in a signing class.
Officials are set to pass a 1-year waiver next month to immediately expand the 25-man FB signing limit, sources tell @SINow.
Coaches can replace up to 7 players who leave for the portal. Max signing # would be 32 (25+7).

There’s also been a slight change to that story though as it sounds like teams can replace any 7 players that decide to go to the transfer portal.

One change from the plan in that story: Teams can replace *any* 7 players who enter the portal (even if they're dismissed).
Those leaving for NFL or retire can't be replaced.
Key date is December signing period. Players entering the portal after that can be replaced (up to 7).

As Dellenger also reports, this is strictly for the December signing period as of right now. If this goes well, officials around college football will plan to meet next year and create something more permanent to this.
The main reason this is being done right now is that so many players have been transferring out from their original schools and when that happens, they don’t have the replacements ready.
Officials will evaluate things next year & plan to create permanent legislation similar to this temporary solution.
As we discuss in the story, this is being done as a response to (1) transfer surge, (2) falling roster #s & (3) impact on HS recruitinghttps://t.co/73XooFUM5j
