The College Football Playoff stands to profit off an expanded bracket in a big-time way, according to a recent report from USA Today.

Earlier this week, the College Football Playoff announced that a 12-team format has officially been recommended and will be further discussed at a meeting in Chicago on June 17-18. It would be a major switch from the current four-team model, which has seen a decline in ratings over the last few years.

As you might’ve guessed, revenue is a driving force behind the potential to switch to a 12-team model. According to Steve Berkowitz of USA Today, the College Football Playoff could see a value increase from $600 million to over $2 billion.

From USA Today:

The figures, from Chicago-based Navigate, are based on a set of assumptions that begin with recent increases in media rights deals negotiated by the NFL, NHL and the Southeastern Conference. Those increases, on a per-TV-viewer basis, have been running at a little more than 50%, said Matt Balvanz, Navigate’s senior vice president for analytics and innovation.

There have been mixed reactions about introducing an expanded field for the College Football Playoff. But with ratings on the decline and interest waning in the postseason, it seems like some sort of change is necessary.

Nothing has been confirmed at this time, but with the potential to see such a massive revenue increase, it’s hard to imagine some sort of move isn’t made. At this point, it’s only a matter of when.
