Don’t expect the ongoing conversations of conference realignment to have much of an impact on the potential of the College Football Playoff expanding to a 12-team format. Heather Dinich of ESPN reported on the situation Tuesday.

The decision by Texas and Oklahoma to leave the Big 12 and explore an opportunity with the SEC will likely result in major conference changes in the coming years. It comes at a time when college football was already experiencing drastic changes, as the Playoff committee considers expanding to a 12-team format.

Dinich reported that realignment is unlikely to affect the push to a 12-team field much, if at all. Without any specific conference tie-ins to the bracket, it’s hard to imagine that changes to the conference could impact the College Football Playoff.

The College Football Playoff committee began considering and seriously discussing expansion following the 2020 season. While it’s still a work-in-progress, there’s serious movement towards a bigger field.

It doesn’t appear that realignment will derail that.
