A former Florida safety has been arrested and charged with the alleged murder of his wife in 2016, according to a report from The News-Press.
Tony Joiner, a captain of Florida’s 2007 team, was arrested on Saturday in Lake Wales, Fla., and charged with second-degree murder, according to the report. The incident happened in 2016 and had gone unsolved for over three years.
Joiner’s wife, Heyzel Obando, was found dead in her apartment on Valentine’s Day in 2016.
Two months after finding Obando, the case was ruled a homicide but no arrests had been made in over three years. Joiner was arrested twice for beating Obando in the past.
Joiner is the second player from Urban Meyer’s 2007 team to be charged with murder. Former UF tight end Aaron Hernandez was indicted on murder charges in 2013 in the death of Odin Lloyd. Hernandez was charged in 2014 for a double homicide that occurred in 2012.
According to 247Sports, both Hernandez and Joiner had run-ins with law enforcement during their time in Gainesville.
