A former B1G assistant coach is expected to join Josh Heupel’s staff at Tennessee.

Blake Toppmeyer of Knoxville News is reporting that Tennessee is expected to hire Mike Ekeler as an assistant coach. He was most recently the special teams coordinator at North Texas, a role he had during the 2020 season.

Ekeler was on Nebraska’s staff under head coach Bo Pelini from 2008-10, where he was the linebackers coach. All three years he was in Lincoln, the Huskers won the Big 12 North Division title outright or shared the crown.

After his three seasons in Lincoln, Ekeler was hired to join Kevin Wilson’s staff at Indiana. He was part of the Hoosiers’ staff in 2011 and 2012, serving in the role as linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator.

Ekeler’s most recent Power 5 job was in 2019, when he worked with Les Miles at Kansas as the inside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator. He was also at North Carolina in 2017 and 2018.
