Arizona had lost 12 consecutive games under Sumlin.
This was Sumlin’s third season in charge of Arizona. He finishes the job with a 9-20 record overall and a 6-17 record in conference play. His best record with Arizona was 5-7, which came in his first season in charge.
He joined Arizona after being fired from Texas A&M in 2017. He went 51-26 overall with the Aggies.
His firing comes with a hefty buyout.
Kevin Sumlin, who already received $10M with no offset to be fired from Texas A&M, will receive approximately $7.5M to be fired from Arizona.
Combined, it makes nearly one Charlie Weis firing from Notre Dame.

It’s not yet clear who the Wildcats will target to be their next head coach. Their season is over.
Despite the ongoing pandemic, several Power 5 teams have already fired their coach this season. Arizona joins a list that includes South Carolina and Vanderbilt. It’s possible other jobs such as Michigan, Texas, Texas Tech or Tennessee could come open.
Elsewhere in the coaching carousel, Indiana defensive coordinator Kane Wommack has agreed to be the next coach at South Alabama.
