Greg Sankey spoke during the SEC’s Media Day on Tuesday. One of the highlights was his explanation of the phone call he had with B1G Commissioner Kevin Warren after the B1G announced its expansion per Brandon Marcello of 247Sports.

Sankey stated that he called Warren on the phone to discuss the fact that the SEC and B1G are going to be 16-team conferences. Texas and Oklahoma will be joining the SEC in 2025, and USC and UCLA are set to join the B1G in 2024.

“I called Kevin on July 5, and just said, ‘Hey, there’s going to be two 16-team conferences,’ and we had a really good and healthy colleague conversation about how we can be effective at communicating,” Sankey said. “Whether that relates to decision-making or not, we’ll see, but just how can how can we work together effectively is on my mind.”

While the 2 spoke about their different conferences, they do have one thing in common. Both the SEC and B1G are 2 of the premier conferences in college football. Sankey and Warren understand the role they have in college football, and are how important it is that they work together.

“I wouldn’t jump to conclusions, but I think both Kevin and I — and I don’t mean to speak for him but I think being consistent with our conversation — understand, given the provenance of our two conferences, the importance of us being able to work together effectively,” Sankey said.
