Social media roasts Jim Phillips for opening speech at ACC Media Days
By Paul Harvey
Published:
ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips took to the podium Wednesday to begin ACC Media Days. His opening statement stretched for quite a while with some interesting remarks throughout.
During his speech, Phillips took a not-so-veiled shot at the B1G and SEC. He remarked that college football is best with a healthy community as opposed to a few “gated communities” carrying all the weight.
Needless to say, Phillips’ speech did not come across well to ACC fans and those outside the conference. He was grilled throughout social media with many fans hammering his remarks.

ACC commissioner Jim Phillips kicking off media days here in Charlotte: “It remains my belief that there is no better conference in the country.”
No one will argue with this.

This is awkward. Jim Phillips’ opening statement went so long, the ACC’s Grant of Rights has expired

Jim Phillips is just embarrassing today on all levels. Total waste of time listening to him.

Jim Phillips talking like it’s 1997 out here.
Jim the world you’re dreaming of has been being dismantled for 30 years, very arguably many more.
The ACC had better be careful with an old college man running its league.
I don’t say that joyfully or gloatingly. https://t.co/Q2djSGDY5l

The SEC and Big Ten are striving for world domination.
ACC commissioner Jim Phillips arguing against college sports turning into the “NFL-Lite.” Doesn’t want it to become a “2-or-3 gated community.”
Noble strategy? Yes.
Winning strategy? hmmmmmmmmm

Seems like every time Jim Phillips talks, each ACC school tries to think of how they can get the hell out of the league..

This Jim Phillips press conference is a microcosm of why FSU needs to get the hell out of this conference.

I appreciate Jim Phillips’ dedication to the old-school collegiate model and college athletes. And I understand he can’t blatantly come out and say the ship is sinking, or at least starting to.
But that sort of idealism can also be what turns a deep (revenue) hole into a grave.
