Brian Kelly is getting things rolling to start his tenure in Baton Rouge, but the new head coach at LSU will need a new starting quarterback for the Tigers.
Tuesday evening, LSU’s starter for 2021 revealed he will be heading for the transfer portal. That player is Max Johnson:
“LSU, Thank you for allowing me to pursue my academic and athletic career here,” Wrote Johnson in a note on Twitter. “With careful and prayerful consideration, I am entering the transfer portal.”
LSU, Thank you for allowing me to pursue my academic and athletic career here. I have made strong relationships that will last a lifetime with coaches, staff and especially my teammates! With careful and prayerful consideration, I am entering the transfer portal.

Johnson threw for 2,814 yards and 27 touchdowns for the Tigers this season. He had just 6 interceptions and completed 60% of his passes on the year.
Johnson’s decision also came with an announcement from his younger brother. Jake Johnson, a 4-star TE for the class of 2022, announced that he was decommitting from the Tigers and reopening his recruitment.
With much prayer and thoughtful consideration, I am de-committing from LSU. I am opening up my recruitment! I plan on early enrollment @Jakejohnson2022 @Max_Johnson_14 https://t.co/Zq4oWpdzj6
