Tez Johnson says Oregon is leaning into underdog mindset vs. Ohio State
Tez Johnson and the Oregon Ducks are gearing up for a rematch with the Ohio State Buckeyes in the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff. The Ducks got the win in the first meeting back in October and earned the No. 1 overall seed in the first 12-team Playoff.
Ahead of the rematch, Johnson was asked about the Ducks wanting to maintain their status as the No. 1 team. However, the receiver doesn’t care about outside opinions.
“It doesn’t matter. Like I said, nobody believed us — in us in the first place so why believe now? We don’t care,” said the star WR. “Underdogs, No. 1. It doesn’t matter. We go 1-0 each week.”
The Ducks entered the season as the No. 3 team in the AP Top 25. The team was underwhelming at the beginning of the season, however, winning close games against FCS Idaho and Boise State. Then, the Ducks really got going and earned the No. 1 seed after defeating Ohio State and finishing 13-0.
Since Week 9, the Ducks have held the No. 1 spot in the AP Poll. The team also got the No. 1 spot in the CFP while their quarterfinal opponent, Ohio State, is the No. 8 seed.
Even with the Ducks being the No. 1 team, the Buckeyes are favored in the rematch by 2.5 points per DraftKings. (Check out the DraftKings promo code Ohio for the best offers.) This matchup will be the first all season in which the Ducks are an underdog. This “disrespect” is what prompted Johnson’s comments. In the October meeting, the Ducks were favored by 3.5 points at home.
Johnson has been one of Oregon’s key players. The WR leads the Ducks in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving TDs. Johnson’s Ducks will kick off against the Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day.
