It is oh so good to have college football back.

Despite all of the change that occurred in the sport this past offseason, it is still all about the on-field product, and Week 1 certainly entertained.

Let’s take a look at the key storylines ahead of Week 2 in the Big Ten.

Friday Night Lights in Chicago

Northwestern hosts Duke Friday night (8 pm CT, FS1) under the lights at its new temporary lakefront location. The Wildcats defeated Miami (Ohio) in its opener at the intimate stadium, sealed by a Robert Fitzgerald interception in the final minute. The ‘Cats will have a national stage to showcase its new digs and the beautiful Chicago skyline in the distance when the Blue Devils come to town. It’s an environment that is arguably the most unique in the sport. Expect another sellout crowd of 12,023 this week as the Wildcats seek payback for their 38-14 loss at Duke last season. They didn’t exactly have an emphatic win over the RedHawks, though, so they’ll need to make some offensive adjustments this week.

B1G-time matchup

No. 9 Michigan hosts No. 4 Texas Saturday (11 am CT, FOX) in a huge Big Ten-SEC clash. It’s the biggest game on the Week 2 slate as it features two College Football Playoff teams from last season. The Longhorns bring their high-powered offense to Ann Arbor against a physical, stifling Wolverines defense. Michigan is a rare home underdog (+6.5 via DraftKings Sportsbook), and it’s likely due to concern over the team’s offense. Can the defending national champions keep up with the ‘Horns?

Michigan was sluggish behind quarterbacks Davis Warren and Alex Orji as well as a revamped offensive line in the season-opening win. The run game struggled as well, so there is a lot of concern about this offense, particularly because of the new o-line.

In-state battle

Iowa State and No. 25 Iowa will clash at Kinnick Stadium Saturday (2:30 CT, CBS) for the Cy-Hawk Trophy. Both teams opened the season with wins over FCS foes. The Hawkeyes stunned the college football world by scoring 40 and totaling nearly 500 yards of offense against Illinois State. It appears that Tim Lester was the right man to take over as OC. Cade McNamara had 251 passing yards and 3 touchdowns, bouncing back nicely after tearing his ACL last fall as well as a slow start in the first half.

Meanwhile, the Cyclones defeated North Dakota and only allowed 121 passing yards. However, they were held to 86 rushing yards, and it will be tough sledding against this Iowa defense. Kirk Ferentz will make his season debut after serving a 1-game suspension due to a recruiting violation. Expect this to be a defensive battle as has usually been the case in this rivalry.

Renewal of an old rivalry

Coach Prime and Colorado head to Lincoln to take on Nebraska Saturday night (6:30 CT, NBC) in the renewal of an old Big Eight/Big 12 rivalry. They met at Folsom Field last year, with the Buffaloes scoring a 36-14 victory in the first season for both Deion Sanders and Matt Rhule.

All eyes will be on the quarterbacks, with Shedeur Sanders coming off a strong season debut and Dylan Raiola making his second start after debuting as a true freshman against UTEP. Sanders threw for 445 yards and 4 touchdowns — 3 to Travis Hunter — in the win over North Dakota State. Raiola completed 19-of-27 passes for 238 yards and 2 scores in the win over the Miners.

Colorado still has holes, especially defensively, and the Huskers, who are favored by 7.5 points via FanDuel, might be able to exploit them this week.

Other storylines to watch

Penn State’s offense looked very formidable in its 34-12 win at West Virginia, which was a far cry from last year’s more conservative unit. New coordinator Andy Kotelnicki looks like a great hire. The No. 8 Nittany Lions and Drew Allar, who threw for 216 yards and 3 touchdowns in the win, host Bowling Green Saturday.

Can Sparty find its offense? Michigan State beat Florida Atlantic 16-10 in its season opener, but Jonathan Smith’s offense left a lot to be desired under quarterback Aidan Chiles. Chiles went just 10-of-24 passing for 114 yards and 2 touchdowns in the win. A tough task awaits at Maryland, which saw quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. go off in its win over UConn. He went 20-of-27 passing for 311 yards and 2 scores.
