It’s never too early to start looking ahead to next season. And while most of the way-too-early college football rankings have already filtered out, ESPN’s preseason Football Power Index top 10 is now set.

Monday morning, SEC Network’s Cole Cubelic tweeted out the preseason top 10 for ESPN’s FPI, and three B1G teams were in the mix.

Clemson sat in the No. 1 spot, not all that surprising. The Tigers have become a powerhouse program under Dabo Swinney and return names like quarterback Trevor Lawrence and running back Travis Etienne, both who will likely be in the Heisman Trophy conversation next fall.

Immediately behind Clemson is Ohio State, which sits at No. 2. The Buckeyes, which will enter Year 2 of the Ryan Day era in 2020, finished last season with a 13-1 record and an appearance in the College Football Playoff.

Two other B1G teams — Penn State and Wisconsin — also made their way into the top 10. Below is the complete top 10, as tweeted out by Cubelic:

  1. Clemson
  2. Ohio State
  3. Oklahoma
  4. Alabama
  5. Penn State
  6. Wisconsin
  7. Texas
  8. Texas A&M
  9. Notre Dame
  10. Georgia

Penn State also returns plenty of talent on both sides of the football. The Nittany Lions have a slew of talented running backs and have Sean Clifford back under center for his second full season as the starter.

Wisconsin might be the most surprising B1G team in the top 10, losing talented players like linebacker Zack Baun, running back Jonathan Taylor, wide receiver Quintez Cephus and a host of other talented players.

It should be interesting to see if any — or all — of those three B1G teams live up to the way-too-early preseason hype in 2020.
