Three B1G Things is a daily weekday update on some of the most unique and interesting stories from across the B1G. It ranges from recruiting to coach press conferences, funny anecdotes to serious situations. We provide our commentary, analysis and opinions on a few topics every day.

It’s been awhile since Nebraska has had the right coach

Stability used to be a pretty big thing at Nebraska. For 25 seasons, Tom Osborne roamed the sidelines in Lincoln. Posting double-digit win totals and winning conference titles were as close to guarantees as you can get in the sports world. Since that time, the Huskers have struggled.

It’s not just showing on the field, and on the basketball court, it’s hitting the accounting books pretty hard, as well.

A recent report shows that no Power Five program has spent more money firing football and basketball coaches over the last 15 years than Nebraska. In football, the Huskers have parted ways with Bill Callahan, Bo Pelini and Mike Riley, while Doc Sadler and Tim Miles have gotten the axe as basketball coaches. In total, Nebraska has spent over $27 million in firing the coaches of its two biggest money-making sports.

That’s not how you want to set the standard in college athletics.

Sports Betting in Big Ten Country

There is big news coming to the upcoming 2022-23 Big Ten football season (and NFL season). Ohio online sports betting and Maryland sports betting are on the way.

Maybe, just maybe, Bill Moos has gotten this thing figured out, though. Scott Frost was one of the hottest football coaches on the market in 2017, bringing him immediately to Nebraska at the first opportunity. Fred Hoiberg is a known commodity as a basketball leader, having plenty of success at Iowa State before leaping to the NBA.

Perhaps stability is returning to Lincoln with Frost and Hoiberg roaming their respective sidelines. Nebraska can’t really afford for those two guys to fail.

Brothers Jack & Bob Dunn set up GoFundMe to help Madison community

If you like to put a positive spin on things (I try to as much as possible), then one thing COVID-19 has helped us see is that there are a lot of really genuine people in the world. Brothers Jack and Bob Dunn belong on that list of awesome dudes.

Tuesday, Jack (a senior wide receiver at Wisconsin) and Bob (a graduate assistant with the Badgers) announced that they are setting up a GoFundMe page to help provide meals to families affected by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The goal? $100,000.

Student-athletes are often incredibly busy with practices, training, film sessions, classes and homework, but Jack and Bob have made the time to help their community in need. It’s just another awesome example of people across this country using their platform to help people in need — and it’s something we all need to remember when this trying time passes.

Tom and Phil vs. Peyton and Tiger

Leave it to a former B1G quarterback to potentially get sports back up and running — at least in some capacity. According to a recent report from CNBC, WarnerMedia and the PGA Tour are working together to potentially set up a two-on-two golf challenge for charity. It would feature two of golf’s biggest names — Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson — and two Hall of Fame quarterbacks — Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.

How awesome would that be? Not only would it provide the world with a distraction, something that is desperately needed as sports have taken a backseat to the world’s health crisis, but the funds could go a long way in helping communities across the country. It’s a win-win idea.

My only complaint? I want to see Mickelson and Manning on the same team, as well as Woods and Brady? I think the type of banter we’d hear from Mickelson and Manning — who have outstanding senses of humor — would provide even more entertainment to those watching. And it’d be interesting to see if they could break the concentration of Woods and Brady, two of the most focused and competitive athletes our country has seen.

Either way, this is a slam-dunk idea. Hopefully it happens in May, as it’s been reported.
