Washington expected to add special teams assistant to support staff
Washington head coach Jedd Fisch is adding former Charlotte special teams coordinator Greg Froelich to his staff, according to a report from FootballScoop’s Zach Barnett.
Barnett will join the support staff as an assistant special teams coach. He spent 2 seasons with Charlotte, during which he helped establish one of the better special teams units in all of college football.
The 49ers were the only FBS team last season to make 100% of its field goal attempts. That unit was a perfect 16-for-16 on tries during the 12-game season, as well as 30-for-30 on point-after attempts.
In Bill Connelly’s SP+ ratings, Charlotte had a top-50 special teams unit.
Washington, on the other hand, had one of the nation’s worst. The Huskies’ third phase ranked 124th out of 134 FBS teams.
In Fisch’s first season, UW ranked among the worst teams in the Big Ten in field goal percentage (13th), yards per punt return (13th), yards per punt (14th), yards allowed per kickoff return (15th), yards allowed per punt return (16th), and touchback percentage (17th).
Tight ends coach Jordan Paopao handled special teams last season. In 2025, former Purdue assistant Chris Petrilli will be that unit’s coordinator.
In hiring Froelich to assist with the unit, it signals a clear emphasis from Fisch to improve upon what was a significant weakness last year.
Petrilli and Froelich both worked with new UW defensive coordinator Ryan Walters. Froelich has previous experience at Illinois, where he was a special teams analyst from 2021-22, and at Michigan, where he was a special teams and running backs analyst from 2017-20. Froelich is a U-M alum.
