If there’s one thing college football fans hate about officiating, particularly when it comes to targeting and personal fouls, is the lack of consistency. And that was on full display on Saturday night in the SEC.

In the Alabama-Missouri matchup this weekend, Crimson Tide defender Raekwon Davis was caught on camera delivering multiple punches to a Tigers offensive lineman while the player was down. And there was nothing subtle about the delivery.

That probably landed Davis an ejection from the game, right?

Wrong.

Davis wasn’t ejected from the game, but just penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct. That 15-yard penalty probably really hurt Alabama.

Seriously? How can that not result in an ejection? Especially when players are being escorted to the locker room following accident contact on target.

It’s just another inconsistency the game has to clean up.

Fortunately, the SEC can still review the play and determine whether or not Davis should serve a suspension for his actions. And it would be shocking if he wasn’t given at least some sort of punishment.

Then again, it’s Nick Saban’s league. So who knows.
