Chalk.

All seven B1G teams favorited this Saturday came out with wins, meaning there were no major upsets in the conference this week. Not everyone covered the respected spread, but there weren’t many four-quarter games, either. Every game was decided by at least two scores, with the closest contests being Iowa’s 19-10 win over Illinois and Ohio State’s 28-17 victory over Penn State.

With everyone holding serve, it set up some important games for Rivalry Week. Michigan State and Nebraska both need wins to get to bowl eligibility. The winner of Minnesota-Wisconsin goes to Indianapolis. Penn State, Wisconsin and Michigan can hit 10 wins on the year with victories next Saturday.

But we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves. Before we dive into Rivalry Week, let’s check into the B1G power rankings following Week 13 action:

14. Rutgers, 2-9 (L, 27-0 vs. Michigan State)

After scoring 21 points on Ohio State last week, some thought Rutgers might have a chance this week against a struggling Michigan State team. It wasn’t terribly lopsided, but the Scarlet Knights were held scoreless for the fourth time in eight B1G games this year.

Last week: No. 14

13. Maryland, 3-8 (L, 54-7 vs. Nebraska)

It seems like Maryland is getting worse every week. Fortunately for the Terrapins there’s only one game remaining, meaning they can’t fall much further down the ladder. Just an atrocious performance against a Nebraska team that was struggling enter the game.

12. Northwestern, 2-9 (L, 38-22 vs. #10 Minnesota)

Give some credit to Northwestern, which was relying on Andrew Marty under center, who had thrown a whopping two passes coming into Saturday’s game. Somehow, the Wildcats mustered the energy to score 22 points and keep things somewhat interesting heading into the fourth quarter against a one-loss Minnesota team. The Wildcats just don’t have any depth right now.

11. Purdue, 4-7 (L, 45-24 vs. #12 Wisconsin)

Bowl hopes were dashed on Saturday with Purdue dropping its seventh game of the season to Wisconsin. Jeff Brohm pulled some plays out of his bag of tricks that helped the Boilermakers take a 17-14 lead in the first half, but the Badgers proved to be too much in the second half. Purdue has one thing left to play for this season: The Old Oaken Bucket.

10. Michigan State, 5-6 (W, 27-0 vs. Rutgers)

The five-game losing streak is now over and Michigan State now needs just a win over a floundering Maryland team to get back to a bowl game. That’s not exactly the prize Spartans fans were hoping for when the season started, but a postseason berth does salvage something from what has been a disappointing season. It was a little concerning to see how much Michigan State struggled to score on Rutgers.

9. Nebraska, 5-6 (W, 54-7 vs. Maryland)

With their backs against the wall, the Huskers came out and fired on all cylinders on both sides of the football. Not only did Nebraska get a win, it got it in convincing fashion. Perhaps that’s exactly the spark the program needs heading into a make-or-break game with Iowa next weekend. If Nebraska wins, it goes bowling. If not, it’ll be another early end to the season.

8. Illinois, 6-5 (L, 19-10 vs. #17 Iowa)

Lovie Ball was non-existent on Saturday and Illinois’ winning streak was snapped in Iowa City. The Illini played well, but just didn’t come up with enough offense to get another tally in the win column this week. Losing the turnover battle three to one was the difference in this one. Now, the Illini try to close out the season on a high note by beating rival Northwestern next week.

7. Indiana, 7-4 (L, 39-14 vs. #13 Michigan)

Indiana has experienced a bit of a reality check the last two weeks. After getting to 7-2, the Hoosiers have fallen in consecutive weeks to the likes of Penn State and Michigan. The program is making strides in the right direction, but it still isn’t quite ready for that big upset just yet. Still, the Hoosiers can get to eight wins on the season if they defeat Purdue on the road next weekend.

6. Iowa, 8-3 (W, 19-10 vs. Illinois)

Not the prettiest performance, but it was enough to get a win over a hot Illinois team. Once again, Keith Duncan proved to be a huge asset for the Hawkeye offense, knocking down four field goals in the game. The offense is going to need to do a little more in order for Iowa to get a win over rival Nebraska next Friday.

5. Wisconsin, 9-2 (W, 45-24 vs. Purdue)

It was a struggle early on, but Jonathan Taylor and the Wisconsin offensive line proved to be too much for Purdue. With the three-touchdown victory, the Badgers set up a showdown with Minnesota for the B1G West title and Paul Bunyan’s Axe. With a win, Wisconsin would get a rematch with Ohio State.

4. Penn State, 9-2 (L, 28-17 vs. #2 Ohio State)

Nobody has given Ohio State a better fight than Penn State did on Saturday. The Nittany Lions had a chance to tie the game in the third quarter, despite trailing 21-0 early. Even in a loss, people saw that James Franklin’s program is for real. Barring a disaster next week against Rutgers, this team will finish with 10 wins.

3. Michigan, 9-2 (W, 39-14 vs. Indiana)

The offense is playing as well as it has all season. The defense is rolling, as well. Right now, Michigan looks like one of the three best teams in the B1G. But we’ll find out a lot about how far this team has come since the start of the year next Saturday, when it hosts Ohio State for the biggest game of the year.

Last week: No. 4

2. Minnesota, 10-1 (W, 38-22 vs. Northwestern)

Following a disappointing loss to Iowa, Minnesota bounced back and got an important road win over Northwestern to keep its College Football Playoff hopes alive. It wasn’t a dominant performance, but it got the job done. The Gophers get a chance to claim the B1G West with a home game against Wisconsin next weekend to close out the regular season.

1. Ohio State, 11-0 (W, 28-17 vs. #8 Penn State)

Saturday was the first time all season the Buckeyes have been tested. And while they didn’t look quite as dominant as they have in the previous 10 games, the offense made plays in clutch situations, and the defense turned up the heat in critical passing situations. Now, we’ll see if Ohio State can continue its streak over Michigan in the post-Urban Meyer era.
