Tommy Armstrong has had better efforts. Nebraska’s third-year starter threw two interceptions, completed only 19 passes and was held to under 20 rushing yards.

But what Armstrong did in the fourth quarter was far greater than what any metric would show. His game-winning touchdown pass to Brandon Reilly lifted the Huskers to an improbable win against unbeaten Michigan State.

Naturally, his late performance earned him recognition.

Here’s how the B1G weekly awards shook out after an eventful Saturday.

Offensive Player of the Week: Tommy Armstrong Jr., Nebraska QB

Defensive Player of the Week: Vonn Bell, Ohio State S

Special Teams Player of the Week: Janarion Grant, Rutgers PR/KR

Freshman of the Week: Ke’Shawn Vaughn, Illinois RB

Bell had the momentum-shifting play that Ohio State needed in a scoreless game. Joshua Perry delivered a hit on Mitch Leidner that forced a rushed throw and Bell returned it for a touchdown. It marked his second score of the year. The All-American candidate picked up his first B1G weekly award of his career.

Grant dazzled yet again in special teams for Rutgers. He racked up 263 all-purpose yards, 98 of which came on a kickoff return for a touchdown. His fourth special teams touchdown of the season resulted in his second weekly B1G honor of the season.

Vaughn’s thrived in the return of Josh Ferguson in Illinois’ blowout win against Purdue. The freshman had a career-high 180 rushing yards — his first 100-yard game — and two scores. He and Ferguson combined for over 300 yards from scrimmage to fuel Illinois’ best offensive output of the season.
