What Kirk Ferentz said during video conference on Sunday
Kirk Ferentz met with the media Sunday evening, just a few days after former players addressed concerns of “racial disparities” within the program. Some of those issues were brought to light on Friday night and several former Hawkeyes spoke out.
Many examples of inappropriate behavior involved strength and conditioning coach Chris Doyle. After numerous allegations were made from several players, Ferentz announced that Doyle would be placed on administrative leave. There will be an independent investigation into those allegations.
Doyle released a statement on Sunday, as well.
To address the numerous concerns that surfaced over the weekend, Ferentz met with reporters on Sunday via a Zoom teleconference. Below are some of comments the Iowa head coach made:
“I’ve got to do a better job of proactively asking questions, seeking things out, asking more hard questions not only of our current players but also former players.”
“I realize fully we have a lot of work to do and we’re all committed to doing that.”
“The bottom line is that I need to ask more hard questions and that’s the concept of this adversary committee.”
“We don’t want people to leave and not feel like this was a good experience. I never want them to feel like they weren’t treated with the great respect that they deserve.”
“Regarding Brian [Ferentz], things that I have heard about or read about, I’ve had discussions with people involved in that but you know, so I think there’s two levels there. That’s how it stands right now.”
“Clearly there’s not enough candid conversation or the players haven’t felt safe enough to visit and give me feedback.”
“However you want to break it down, I’m the one who’s responsible, I’m the one who’s got to be accountable.”
“I did ask multiple players if they feel like I’m part of the problem or if we can’t move forward with me here, then I’d appreciate that feedback. That’s not what I’ve heard thus far.”
“There’s a lot of pride in this program and I think a common theme is they all want what’s best for our team.”
