DeShaun Foster Bio

Chip Kelly left UCLA in a lurch when he decided to leave in February 2024 to become the offensive coordinator at Ohio State. Because of the timing, a little over a month before the start of spring practice, it made finding his replacement difficult.

So athletic director Martin Jarmond stayed in-house by elevating running backs coach DeShaun Foster to lead the program into its first season as a member of the Big Ten.

Foster is held in high regard by UCLA fans because of a playing career in which he earned All-American honors, set school single-game records of 301 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns, and was inducted into the Bruins’ athletic Hall of Fame.

A stellar running back who helped get the Carolina Panthers to Super Bowl XXXVIII against the New England Patriots, Foster returned to his alma mater after retirement to begin his coaching career. He started as a volunteer assistant, before spending 2 seasons as a graduate assistant. Then after spending a season as running backs coach under Kliff Kingsbury at Texas Tech, he followed his heart back to UCLA again.

Foster went 5-7 in his first season as a head coach in 2024.
