About B1G football: The Big Ten was formed in 1895, making it the oldest conference in the country. There were 7 original members: Chicago, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue and Michigan. Indiana and Iowa joined shortly afterward, and Ohio State joined in 1912.
The Big Ten has been active in expanding. It added Penn State, beginning with the 1993 season. Nebraska became the 12th league team in 2011. Maryland and Rutgers arrived in 2014. Reacting to the SEC adding Texas and Oklahoma, the B1G countered by adding USC and UCLA, and then Oregon and Washington in 2024.

About the Big 12: Few conferences have undergone more change than the current Big 12. It has changed names, added teams, lost teams, etc. Officially, the league formed in 1994, but most of its core teams had been together for decades in the now-defunct Big 8 and Southwest Conference. In 2022, there were 10 teams in the Big 12. Soon after, Texas and Oklahoma announced they were leaving to join to the SEC. The Big 12 then added 8 teams over the next 2 seasons to get to 16 in time for the 2024 college football season.
Most recent national champion: Texas (2005) and Oklahoma (2000) won national championships while members of the Big 12 but now are in the SEC. Among current Big 12 members, Colorado is the most recent national champion, having shared the 1990 title.
