Brad Underwood comments on early development of Illinois newcomer Zacharie Perrin
After the addition of French power forward Zacharie Perrin last month, Illinois head coach Brad Underwood spoke about the progress he has been making early on in his time with the Illini.
Like many college players, Perrin didn’t come in already as a polished NBA prospect, but Underwood praised the work he has been putting in so far.
“Zach’s been phenomenal,” Underwood said. “He’s working every day. Zach’s probably getting pretty close.”
The 6-foot-10 forward hasn’t seen the floor yet, but he is eligible to play and could be ready to go at some point in the season.
Many college players join the team months in advance, giving them time to get work in and get to know their teammates. Perrin didn’t get that chance, which could be a factor for why he isn’t suiting up just yet.
“You’ve got to understand, this is not just him,” Underwood said. “It’s building the confidence and the trust of the four other guys he’s going to play with and going out on the court and doing that.”
Underwood also said that weightlifting is something Perrin has had to get adjusted to and wasn’t able to be thrown right into intense workouts.
Regardless of his status now, Underwood has confidence in Perrin’s work ethic.
“He’s been very diligent in his work ethic,” Underwood said. “He’s gaining on this probably quicker than I thought.”
