What appeared to be a very scary injury for Illinois star Ayo Dosunmu has turned out to be better than expected for head coach Brad Underwood and the Fighting Illini.

Dosunmu suffered a left leg injury on the final play of Tuesday night’s game against Michigan State in Champaign. Dosunmu fell to the floor after his knee appeared to buckle and needed assistance to get back to the locker room.

At first site it didn’t look good.

But this week, Jeremy Werner of Illini Inquirer reported there was “no structural damage,” to Dosunmu’s leg, which was a best-case scenario for the Illini. Now, Underwood has issued another update on his sophomore star.

According to Derek Piper of 247Sports, Underwood said Dosunmu is “day-to-day” and has “done some work” in practice. He will travel with the team to Piscataway, as Illinois takes on Rutgers on Saturday.

There’s still no projected return date for Dosunmu, but it could be sooner than expected.

This season, Dosunmu is averaging 15.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. He’s shooting 47 percent from the floor.
